There are over 700 islands and 2000 cays in the Bahamas. Some are owned by cruise ship lines to serve as destination resorts for passengers. Half Moon Cay is the 2,400 acre island for Holland America and Carnival cruises. (photo courtesy of Carnival Cruise lines)

The resort area had cabanas, bars, playgrounds, barbeques and even a chapel.

The warm clear turquoise waters and powdery white sands were very inviting.

A nature walk had signs identifying a variety of palms, flowering plants and small animals.

There was an opportunity to swim with stingrays.

A mangrove lagoon was a suitable spot for kayaking.

Catamarans and hang gliders were available for rent.

Like many of the Bahamian cays, Half Moon used to be a hide-out for pirates.

In a fitting end to our vacation, we enjoyed a brilliant sunset.
